Setting goals and achieving them requires a strong sense of confidence and lack of doubt in yourself. You must know deep down inside that what you want and desire is going to happen and that you will succeed. Expect it to happen and know there is no other way.

Below are some great quotes on how to achieve your goals:

“Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.”-Fitzhugh Dodson

“Aim for the top. There is plenty of room there. There are so few at the top it is almost lonely there.”-Samuel Insull

“If I’ve got correct goals, and if I keep pursuing them the best way I know how, everything falls into line. If I do the right thing right, I’m going to succeed.”-Dan Dierdorf

“An average person with average talent, ambition and education, can outstrip the most brilliant genius in our society,if that person has clear, focused goals.”- Brian Tracy

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”-Anonymous

In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.”-Author Unknown

“Goals. There’s not telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. There’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.”-Jim Rohn

“The goal you set must be challenging. At the same time, it should be realistic and attainable, not impossible to reach. It should be challenging enough to make you stretch, but not so far that you break.”-Rick Hansen

Setting and Achieving Goals

Many people make the mistake of setting the wrong types of goals, and as a result either do not achieve what they really desire, or they give up entirely on their goals because they are not motivated by them. It is very important that the goals you set for yourself are aligned with the basic values you have for your life.

Your basic values are the things that you believe in, are passionate about and what you regard as important. They are who you are and what you stand for. For example, if honesty and fairness is something you value as a person, your goals and future actions should be aligned with these values. Such as making money, in a way that is fair and honest, without cheating or harming people.

Another important consideration to make when setting goals and achieving them is whether or not they challenge you. If the goals you are setting do not pull you outside your comfort zone, then you are unlikely to feel motivated and driven to achieve them. Keep in mind, however, that goals should not be too challenging, or unrealistic, or they will seem impossible to accomplish and you will most likely give up on them.

When you are setting your goals focus on thinking big and stretching your mind more than usual. What may seem possible for one person, may seem completely impossible to another. The goals you set should be based on what you realistically believe you can achieve. Make sure they are the things that you really want to do in life, and are aligned with what you believe in and believe you can achieve. If you can do this you will set goals that are right for you, and vastly increase the chances you will accomplish them.

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn’t fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn’t dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic. This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher. The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can’t do this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment. Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately for the bumblebee no one has told it so. So fly it does.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned. On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

Making your goals achievable and believable is very important. If you don’t believe in what you are trying to accomplish, you won’t get very far. Inspiring goals must be achievable. By “achievable” I mean, they must be believable (by you), capable of happening, functional, realistic, and true to life. Let’s take a look at each of these points:

· Believable – If you aren’t able to set a goal and firmly believe that it is possible for you to reach it, you may as well throw that goal right back out of the window. You must be able to believe in your goal enough that you believe in yourself to accomplish it.

· Capable of happening – If you don’t believe in your goal or yourself, you’ll most likely never think it is capable of happening. You must be able to envision yourself as having already accomplished your goal.

· Functional – Is your goals something that you are able to work on right this very second? If not, scratch it. Your goal must be functional. It must be something that you are qualified and able to start working on right now.

· Realistic – Your goal must be real. It must be concrete. It must be something that you know you are able to do. If you don’t know how to play the piano but want to learn, your first goal should be to begin taking piano lessons, not playing the piano with an orchestra in three weeks. Be realistic.

· True to life – Does your goal represent the reality of your life? Have you whittled it down to very basic, core, actionable steps you can take towards reaching it?

Keeping a record when it comes to your goals is very important. It allows you to look back and discover the progress you’ve made towards your goals. Keeping a journal is a great way to do this. Here are some tips you can use on how to keep a journal for your goals.

JOURNAL OFTEN
It is important that you continue journaling often in your goal journal. Many people start keeping record of their progress, then tend to slack after a while. This usually happens when they become bored with their goals or are procrastinating, and thus not actually working towards their goals anymore.

RECORD DATES AND TIMES
As you journal about your goal process, remember to include dates and times on each entry. This is especially important because it will show you how long it took for you to step from one point to another.

REFLECT EACH MONTH
Usually your goals will either be long-term or will be reached and then new goals will be set. Either way, it is important for you to take time to reflect at the end of each month on where you are and what you’ve accomplished within the month. You’ll be able to spot flaws in time management and productivity. These can be tweaked for even better performance in upcoming months.

WRITE BRIEF ENTRIES
In most cases, you won’t need to create long, sprawling journal entries about your goals. Simply record the date and time, then write a brief statement about what you accomplished that day.

A lot of resolutions never stick because of many different reasons. Some reasons include:

THEY’RE TOO FAR OUT THERE
Almost every person that sets new year’s resolutions make poor choices. They mean well, and want to make positive changes in their life. But they aren’t being truthful or real with themselves. Instead, they set resolutions that are not possible for them to keep.

THEY’RE NOT EMPOWERING
In order for you to be motivated to keep your new year’s resolutions, you must become empowered by them in some form or fashion. When you set a resolution, ask yourself why that resolution will make your life better, or how it will improve your way of living.

THEY’RE NOT VERY COMPELLING
Any resolution you set must motivate you. It must excite you to no end. If it doesn’t, you’ll never commit to keeping it. You might do well for a while, but when the newness of this resolution wears off, you’ll go right back to your old habits again. Resolutions that aren’t motivating tend to never stick.

Now that you can see here some of the reasons why resolutions rarely stick, you might be wondering what the point is in setting resolutions. That’s a very good point, and one you should further consider. Who are you fooling by setting resolutions that you’ll never keep? Only yourself.

How many times have you set goals at the beginning of the year, only to find yourself stuck at some point? You most likely tossed your goals out the window because you didn’t see any other way possible to reach them. Sound familiar? Think of a positive attitude as the glue that binds your goals. Without it, your goals fall apart and are usually left in shreds at your feet. Why? Because pessimism leads to doubt and doubt leads to fear. Fear leads to you telling yourself there’s no point in even trying anymore and walking away from what you’ve dreamed of doing.

A positive attitude will keep you moving, fill you with hope, lead you to others who can help you, motivate you and prevent you from getting sidetracked. As you can see from this very short list, a positive attitude is essential. Without it, you may become frustrated and feel like giving up at the first sign of resistance. In contrast, possessing a positive attitude can keep you strong as you move and work towards your goals every day. It will fill you with fresh hope and expectation of reaching your final mark.

We all get our pens and notepads out at the beginning of the year and write down all the things we want to accomplish for the year. Most of the time we never reach these goals.

The truth is, goals are not a necessity. The reason why so many people set goals and resolutions at the beginning of every year is usually because they feel like they have to. The new year is often compared to a clean slate, or a fresh start. For some reason everybody jumps on the bandwagon of using that to set lots of goals that will never be reached.

This lack of success almost always creates a feeling of frustration and leads people to say, “I quit.” Then by the end of the year, when they realize they didn’t accomplish much, they start the cycle all over again with the next new year.

Why not stop this vicious cycle now? Instead of setting goals this new year, try something different. Focus on completing one thing right now. Set one tiny goal and work on it until it’s done. Then move on to something else.
