Memories Are Made of This-Deana Martin
The book Memories Are Made of This by Deana Martin is a fascinating account about the life of the beloved Dean Martin told through the eyes of his daughter Deana. Her captivating memoir of her father is heartfelt and very honest. She recalls her early childhood and what it was like to grow up as the daughter of Dean Martin. She delights in telling wonderful and funny stories of her father and his “pallies” known as the Rat Pack. Below is one of the stories that Deana quotes about her father which shows his legendary kindness:
“Violet Crocetti was a dear and wonderful relative of ours from Steubenville, and she told me a story that just about sums him up. She’d arrived at a party at the Fort Steuben Hotel to celebrate Dad’s return in high-heeled shoes and strapless tafetta gown. As she walked in, all heads turned and, momentarily distracted, she stumbled and fell head over heels in the middle of the foyer. Everyone gasped with embarrassment as she plunged to the floor and landed in an ungainly heap. No one tried to help her up.
Suddenly, Dad stepped forward, applauded enthusiastically, and picked her up. Well, done, Vi, he said with a smile. That was exactly as we rehearsed it! He made everybody believe the whole thing was staged and that she’d done a brilliant pratfall. She was so grateful, she never forgot his kindness.”
